Beliefs
Nansemond River Baptist Church, a member of the Southern Baptist Convention, adheres to the Baptist Faith & Message, as revised in 2000.
Our core values are:
WE BELIEVE THE BIBLE.
God's Word is the foundation and directive for all that we do. We believe that our relevancy in the world and our obedience to our Lord is only assured as we remain faithful to the reading, teaching, preaching, believing, and living of God's Word. The Bible is our sole authority for faith and practice.
WE BELIEVE IN THE FAMILY.
The family is second in importance only to our personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that God established the home as the seed bed of our faith. Godly parents, submissive wives, and husbands who honor and fulfill their God-appointed positions as spiritual leaders ensure the bringing up of children who know "the way they should go" and who, when they are old, "will not depart from it!"
WE BELIEVE IN WORSHIP.
Freedom in worship that is orderly, biblical, and Christ-centered is an integral part of our corporate services. We believe that the Christian's destiny is to worship with that "great cloud of witnesses" before the throne of God in heaven. Our gatherings ought to be a prefigurement of that glorious event.
WE BELIEVE IN EVANGELISM.
Sharing the Gospel with the lost is the central thrust of our outreach ministry. We believe that evangelism is at the heart of the Great Commission and that all believers are called to that primary task.
WE BELIEVE IN DISCIPLESHIP.
Teaching new believers is equal to and immediately follows the work of evangelism. We believe that it is the responsibility of the church to ground its members in knowledge of the Word and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ through a comprehensive program of Christ-centered, Bible exposition that stresses both training and accountability.
WE BELIEVE IN FELLOWSHIP.
The local church is a family that is called to nurture its own. We believe that "church" ought to be fun and fulfilling and that our vital Christian relationships ought to extend beyond the church walls.
WE BELIEVE IN MINISTRY.
God calls the church to serve as well as to evangelize. We believe that the church should be creative and relevant in its ministry and that all ministry, regardless of its forms, must have at its heart the evangelization of the lost and the edification of the saved.
WE BELIEVE IN MISSIONS.
Christ has commissioned His church to carry the Gospel to "all nations." We believe that God has called us to cooperate in a global ministry effort which begins in our own community.
WE BELIEVE IN EXCELLENCE.
We believe that God deserves our best. In appearance as well as in content, Christ must be glorified in all that we do.
